The locals made fun of the fat tires on my bike until we hit the rough pavement. Then all they did was whine about the road conditions while I cruised along in relative comfort. :)

One of my coworkers rode a big heavy mountain bike with decently fat tires on a 100-miler with us. I don’t think anyone was laughing, we were impressed. It might have been the second most inappropriate bike to do the full ride, after an E lliptigo (which was still faster than me, that was piloted by an old marathon runner type) . Someone apparently did a cut down version of the ride (the last 40 miles) on a penny farthing though, which seems like a real challenge .

I was on a group training ride for the MS-150 when I heard the distinctive sound of knobbies on pavement coming up from behind. I tried to hang with him after he passed, but he was maintaining a pace I couldn’t match on my road bike. The dude was a monster in baggy shorts.
